Origin Story
据明代《列仙全传》记载：刘海原名刘玄英，五代时燕国丞相
According to Ming Dynasty “Complete Biographies of Immortals”: Liu Hai, originally Liu Xuanying, was Prime Minister of Yan during Five Dynasties
遇正阳子钟离权点化悟道，褪去宰相蟒袍遁入终南山修行
Enlightened by immortal Zhongli Quan, he discarded official robes to practice in Zhongnan Mountains
收服千年金蟾妖精时，以其性贪财，遂以金钱为饵度化
When subduing a millennium-old toad demon, he used coins as bait to convert its greediness
金蟾吐钱助贫苦百姓，遂成「撒钱济贫」的吉祥寓意
The toad spat coins to help the poor, forming the auspicious meaning of “spreading wealth to aid needy”
后世工匠附会「刘海戏金蟾，步步钓金钱」的吉祥图案
